Alzheimer's Unlocked - Why It Is Important to Know You Have Alzheimer's Or Dementia

The bible of mental health professionals,Memory Hack the DSM, is the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. While the current release does not include Internet Addiction, it is up for discussion and could be included in a future update of the DSM. This would have significant ramifications for mental health patients whose insurance companies base coverage policies on the DSM.

Internet Addiction will not likely be added just yet. But with the issue being discussed, the fact that it is a legitimate problem that needs to be addressed by the mental health community is now commonly accepted. The average person is online at least a few hours each week. It's not uncommon for our children, teens and adults to be online for hours at a time. And the internet is no doubt addictive.

No one can yet truly quantify or qualify the real impact the Internet has had on society. What we know for sure is that like anything else, it has its good side and its bad side. The easy accessibility to information is wonderfully empowering. It's fun. It's educational. And yes, it is addictive. We don't need a psychiatrist to tell us that. People's lives are being sucked up by the web. Availability of uncensored content is potentially corrupting and destructive.

Thought needs to be put into how to properly include online life in our daily lives. Do we allow our kids to chat for hours via Facebook? Do we need to install web content filters to block bad content? Do we need to set time limits on our computers? Should we push for laws to require control over what is accessible on the Internet? Should online gambling be legal? Obviously everyone needs to decide for themselves - but the point is, everyone need to consider how to make sure that the Internet does not turn into compulsive behavior that disrupts our ability to live a normal and productive life.
