How Weather May Affect Joints?

The fact that we want to discuss before going ahead is that the answer to whether weather change affects joints or not is still under continuous research. Many studies have been conducted in the past regarding this. Out of all, some concluded that there is a relation between weather change and joint health whereas some got negative answers. Despite all this, the fact cannot be denied that people do experience joint discomfort because of weather changes. Let us see what is believed to be the reason.

It is said that people suffering from arthritis or other joint problems are sensitive to changes in barometric pressure that gets affected by weather changes. So, as a result, severe joint pain may occur. It is believed that when the cartilage wears down in arthritis, the nerves get exposed, and they respond to temperature changes.

Besides this, it is also said that when the temperature drops, the joint fluid becomes thicker, and this affects joint mobility while causing stiffness. Another theory here is that when the barometric pressure changes, muscles, tendons, and scar tissues expand and contract. This activity causes pain in the joints, especially the ones affected by arthritis.

What Type of Weather Change Affects the Joints?

The discomfort generally occurs when the temperature drops. According to a survey, researchers examined that arthritic pain increases with every 10 degrees drop in the temperature. While on the other hand, another survey showed that pain and stiffness in arthritic people became worse with rising humidity and barometric pressure.

How to Combat Joint discomfort Caused by Weather Changes?

Some simple tips can help fight weather-related joint discomfort:

  • Keep the affected joint warm either by a warm bath or using multilayer clothing. You can also use socks, gloves, or kneecaps.
  • A paraffin bath may help.
  • In conditions with worse pain, it is advised to consult the doctor for anti-inflammatories or analgesics.
  • Try maintaining a healthy weight as being overweight puts stress on your joints.
  • Avoid straining your affected joint(s) by unnecessarily lifting heavy goods.
