Get Relief From Acid Reflux With These Tips

If you are a smoker, consider quitting. Nicotine helps increase stomach acid production, which makes your acid reflux worse. However, stopping smoking cold turkey can actually worsen your acid reflux as well. Try to quit slowly.

Don't wear restrictive clothing. Belts, pantyhose or waistbands that are too tight can cause problems. Wearing clothes that are too tight can put a lot of pressure on your abdomen. This can lead to heartburn and reflux symptoms. Wear loose clothes and relax.

When you complete your meal, do not lie down on your back or stomach. This position uses gravity to build up acid in your stomach, which is one of the main reasons why you get acid reflux and heartburn. Walk around your home or do the dishes after you eat to prevent this from happening.

Avoid Certain Foods. Some foods are more likely to trigger acid reflux than others. These include caffeine, spicy food, alcohol, tomatoes, chocolate, and any foods that are acidic in nature. If you frequently suffer from acid reflux, consider eliminating these foods from your diet, or at least try not to eat them in the hours before you go to bed.

Alter your activity after meals. If you suffer from frequent bouts of acid reflux, watch your activity after meals. Avoid clothing that is tight around the middle, and try not to bend over or do any heavy lifting. All of these things can help keep your stomach acid where it belongs.

You may wish to give up spicy foods, as they may be a large factor in your acid reflux attacks. Start first by completely avoiding spicy foods altogether and see if this helps. If it does, then slowly start working spicy foods back into your diet in order to find what your tolerance level is.
