A subnet mask is simply a number indicating how many bits of the IP address refer to the network, and how many refer to the hosts within that network. This means that the sizes of networks for given subnet masks are always powers of 2. A subnet mask of /24 (255.255.255.0), quite possibly the most common for small networks, allows for 254 hosts.
